|Driving down Route 53 in Chicago a few months ago, I got passed by a Tesla Model S. You know, the only electric car than can go from 0-60 in 3.2 seconds? That encounter got me thinking about the founder of the company. I learned that Elon Musk’s ultimate goal with his three companies, TESLA, SpaceX and SolarCity is to colonize planet Mars. No, really! Why? Just in case we destroy ourselves on this planet, humans will have another place to live. Fascinating. Because the Bible says this planet is going to be destroyed…and then remade by God.
Musk has aptly observed that America has lost its sense of wonder and exploration. Case in point: NASA now counts on other country’s space programs (and Musk’s SpaceX) to get astronauts to the International Space Station. He’s trying to recapture the joy of pushing the boundaries for the human race by colonizing the planet Mars, setting up thousands of regular supply trips to the red planet to start the process of humans living there. No doubt about it: this is a lofty goal. And currently, it’s the ultimate goal that is getting thousands of Musk employees out of bed every day.
If a goal like this that started in Musk’s youth by reading comic books can invigorate so many super-smart people, how much more invigorated should we be as Christians? We know the future because God told us. Man, we should be excited!!! We know this planet will be destroyed. We know God will remake it perfectly. We have a plan; the Plan’s name is Jesus. He provides the ONLY hope to the human race.
Hope isn’t on Mars.
Musk said he hopes to maybe die on Mars in his old age. The question isn’t, “On which planet will you die?” The questions are, “What happens after you die?” and “Who paid for your sin?” If you accept the payment Jesus made for you, you have eternal life now and your ultimate home will be the remade earth “wherein dwelleth righteousness.”
