|Today’s Scripture: Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armor of God that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. Ephesians 6:10-11|
|Many times we send our children or grandchildren to Awana. It is encouraging to hear them say their little verses and earn their patches and jewels. In reality, there is nothing “little” about those verses. In fact, we should be memorizing the Word of God for ourselves. Many of us fall during our trials because, when Satan attacks us, we have no verses hidden in our hearts to use as a defense against his power. So, we fall prey to his wiles and after the dust has settled, we wonder how we failed yet again.
If the children in our church can put on the armor of God through scripture memory, then adults, why are we not doing so? I have seen men who possess pasts so dark that you would never think they could shed a spot of light anywhere. Yet, they have memorized God’s Word and become pastors inside Angola State Penitentiary. I have met grown men who are on death row, who now call it life row because of what the Lord has done in their lives through salvation and His Word. Several hundred inmates at Angola are involved with a scripture memory project we refer to as the “Psalm One Project”. We recently introduced the brand new workbook for the “Psalm One Project” that was produced here at Victory In Grace. Throughout its pages are scripture memorization passages that are broken down into challenges with explanations for each verse. These men were challenged to use this workbook not only for themselves, but also to use as a tool to minster to their own children outside the walls of the prison. These inmates were very touched and excited about this new component of the program started by the founder of Awana, Art Rorheim.
Believer, we are not living behind barbed wire fences. We are given the privilege of attending church and fellowshipping with other believers whenever we please. Many of us have multiple Bibles sitting around the house. We have Bible apps on our phones, countless resources to help us memorize the Word of God, and despite all of those resources, we leave scripture memorization to children and inmates?
Choose to begin arming yourself with the Word of God today, and you will begin to see triumph over those trials and temptations in your life. Set up a scripture memory plan for yourself with attainable daily or weekly goals, and you will be surprised at how the invisible armor hidden in your heart will become a very visible conqueror in your life.
