Today’s Scripture: And when she saw Peter warming himself, she looked upon him, and said, And thou also wast with Jesus of Nazareth. Mark 14:67
“You are the Christ!” Peter boldly declared in the past. Then, at the last supper, he told Jesus that He would die for Him before He ever deserted Him.
Christ turned to Peter and said, “Even this night, before the cock crows twice, you will deny me three times.”
Peter would not believe this! He would never be ashamed of the Messiah. He was determined, but… everything changed.
Christ was arrested; Peter ran like the others when they arrested Him. He then followed them to see where they were taking Jesus. As he was standing by a fire in the courtyard, a couple people asked if he knew Jesus.
“No, I have never heard of the Man,” Peter replied both times, then a rooster crew.
Shortly after, the people recognized his accent and declared that he was a disciple of this Jesus.
“I know not the man of whom you speak!” Peter yelled.
The rooster crowed the second time. Peter remembered what the Lord said and wept. How would he ever be able to look at Christ again? Even if He was released by the Romans, Peter had rejected Him in His greatest time of need.
Christ would die, but then He rose from the dead! Peter had seen Him a couple times, but his guilt was still tearing him apart. Christ would meet Peter again on the seashore by a warm fire. There, Christ asked Peter three times if he loved Him.
Three times Peter said, “You know I love you.” Peter was grieved that Christ had to ask him three times, but he didn’t realize what Christ did.
Christ had Peter declare his love for Jesus the same number of times Peter denied Christ. Christ provided restoration for each of Peter’s denials. By this fire, Peter demonstrated his love for Christ three times! Christ provided restoration for Peter, and He can restore your fellowship – just ask.
