Today’s Scripture: The words of a talebearer are as wounds, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly. Proverbs 18:8
The Bible calls people who gossip and complain about others “talebearers.” People naturally complain about others, but it is much harder for a person to complain about someone if there is no one to complain to. You may find yourself having people come up to you and gossip about others. It is a serious problem when people see you as someone who will listen. You are a “go-to person.”
When somebody comes to me complaining about another person, I will ask that person if he/she has talked to the person they are complaining about. That will usually stop them in their tracks.
Don’t be a “go-to person”! You are just as guilty of gossiping if you are listening to someone gossip. In Proverbs, it says that a talebearer’s words are like wounds. Listening to gossip will hurt you and it will hurt your relationship with others.
We need to be sure we have a testimony so strong that people will assume we will never listen to their complaints about their pastor, to their “backbiting” other believers, or to their disrespect for their boss.
God hates gossip and murmuring; so should we.
