Today’s Scripture: Now the sons of Eli were sons of Belial; they knew not the LORD…Wherefore the sin of the young men was very great before the LORD: for men abhorred the offering of the LORD. 1 Samuel 2:12, 17
A family was sitting down to dinner one evening, and as the meal progressed, the son asked, “Dad, are bugs good to eat?”
Not wanting to make everyone lose their appetites, the dad said, “Son, let’s not talk about disgusting things at dinner.”
Later that evening, the dad wanted to make sure his son did not feel like his questions were being ignored, so he asked him, “Son, what was it you wanted to know about bugs at dinner?”
His son replied, “Oh, never mind. There was a bug in your soup, but it is too late now.”
It is probably a good idea to pay attention to the questions that your children have. Today we are looking at a dad who did not pay attention to his two sons. Eli was the High Priest of Israel, a very esteemed and regarded position. He wore ornate clothing and had a very high responsibility. He was to speak to God on behalf of the people, and God would speak through him to the people.
The High Priest served for life, and the position was to be passed down to his children, so one of his sons, who were called the sons of Belial, would eventually be the High Priest. These sons were extremely wicked. They were committing horrible sins in their daily work as priests of the temple. Later we will see the Lord tell Samuel that there will be a great price for Eli to pay because his sons made themselves wicked, and Eli did not restrain them.
Fathers – pay attention to your children. They want and need your love and attention. Do not end up like Eli.
