Today’s Scripture: And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God… Romans 8:28a

Elizabeth was always brimming with joy. Yet, behind her bright countenance, Elizabeth dealt with debilitating pain and illness, day after day. It seemed as though no matter what she faced, she always had a smile, until one day that joy melted away. Within three months, she lost both of her children. The passing of her infant and her precious four-year old crushed her. She cried out to God for rescue from the dark cloud of misery that had overtaken her. For many years, we have sung the words that resulted from her resolve to draw close to the Lord:

More love to Thee, O Christ, more love to Thee!
Hear Thou the prayer I make on bended knee;
This is my earnest plea: More love, O Christ, to Thee;
More love to Thee, more love to Thee!

Once earthly joy I craved, sought peace and rest;
Now Thee alone I seek, give what is best;
This all my prayer shall be: More love, O Christ, to Thee;
More love to Thee, more love to Thee!

Let sorrow do its work, come grief or pain;
Sweet are Thy messengers, sweet their refrain,
When they can sing with me: More love, O Christ, to Thee;
More love to Thee, more love to Thee!…

Elizabeth Prentiss found that as her trust in Him grew deeper, so did her love. God did something amazing through her pain, and God wants to do something amazing with us. For Him to work, we must determine to find our strength and sufficiency in Him. What Satan intends for our destruction, God can, and will, do mighty things with if we simply choose to glorify Him through it.

Whatever you are facing today, know that God allowed it for a reason. Press on with the knowledge that it is for your benefit and the benefit of countless others. Remember, there is purpose behind your pain.
