A Zeal for God – Jim Scudder, Jr.

Today’s Scripture: And when he was departed thence, he lighted on Jehonadab the son of Rechab coming to meet him: and he saluted him, and said to him, Is thine heart right, as my heart is with thy heart? And Jehonadab answered, It is. If it be, give methine hand. And he gave himhis hand; and he took him up to him into the chariot.  And he said, Come with me, and see my zeal for the LORD. So they made him ride in his chariot. 2 Kings 10:15-16

When we look at the life of Eli the High Priest, we see the life of a man who did many good things for the Lord but did not finish well. He failed in raising his sons, and because of that, his legacy as High Priest ended.

In contrast, we see a young man named Jehonadab who had an amazing zeal for the Lord and passion for God. From the text, we do not learn a lot about what kind of dad Jehonadab was, but we can read later on about the stand he took for righteousness.

In 2 Kings 10, we see Jehonadab helping Jehu clean out the idolatry brought in by the wicked rulers Ahab and Jezebel.

I think Jehonadab lived a realistic life. He set standards for his children, and he lived up to those standards. Two hundred forty years later, we read about his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren – six generations of blessing and godliness all based on one man’s faithfulness.

In Jeremiah 35, the descendants of Jehonadab still obeyed the important principles laid down hundreds of years before. They wanted to be pure and obey God. Far too often today we see Christians that want to blend in with the culture. I think it is better to stand out from the culture or the testimony for Christ will completely disappear from our lives.

Christian, what about you? Do you want Eli’s legacy or Jehonadab’s legacy? Ask God for help to have a zeal for Him.
