Negative Pressure – C.J. Armstrong

Today’s Scripture: Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart. 2 Timothy 2:22

Suppose that you took cups of different materials and connected them to a specialized pump. When activated, the pump would remove all of the air from the cups’ interior.

The resulting vacuum would place a great amount of stress upon the cup. Depending upon the material, the cup might withstand the strain of the vacuum for a time, but eventually the vacuum would overcome the material. A glass cup might soon implode beneath the strain. A porcelain cup might later crack to allow air into the interior. Because nature abhors a vacuum, one way or the other that cup will break to permit the entrance of air.

This illustrates what I call “negative pressure righteousness”. All of us are aware of habits and actions in our lives that should not be. As we try to remove these habits and actions, the weights and sins that hold us back, we create a spiritual and mental vacuum in our life. Since nature abhors a vacuum, our flesh and sin nature will naturally try to fill that vacant space with some other weight, sin or vanity. This is why trying to remove a shortcoming in our lives so often invites other trouble.

The best way to combat negative pressure righteousness is with positive pressure righteousness. Positive pressure righteousness results from replacing weights and sins with godliness and holiness. Fill the void left by the removal of sin with the righteousness of good works. The resulting balance and equilibrium will make it much easier to live a successful Christian life and to avoid surrendering to temptations. Don’t let the vacuum of negative pressure righteousness crack you. Add some good works and biblical meditation to your life. You will find yourself standing stronger in the face of temptation.
