A Lion or a Mouse? – Dr. James A. Scudder

Today’s Scripture: Wherefore the LORD brought upon them the captains of the host of the king of Assyria, which took Manasseh among the thorns, and bound him with fetters, and carried him to Babylon. And when he was in affliction, he besought the LORD his God, and humbled himself greatly before the God of his fathers, And prayed unto him: and he was intreated of him, and heard his supplication, and brought him again to Jerusalem into his kingdom. Then Manasseh knew that the LORD he was God. 2 Chronicles 33:11–13

Do you know who you are? Once there was a mouse who grew up in a nice family with his parents, brothers, and sisters. As the mouse became older, he thought he would like to become a lion. So, the little mouse began to practice his walk and his roar. Before long, he was walking proudly just like the lions. He even began to perfect his roar until he could do it like the best of them. Then one day the mouse saw a pride of lions and thought he would join them. He coolly walked towards them and let out his meanest roar. In one gulp, he entered the “lion kingdom.”

Those Christians who serve Christ are like lions in a pride. They are strong and powerful. Those who refuse to serve the Lord are like the poor, weak mouse. No matter how hard they try to pretend they are lions, it doesn’t take much to prove what they really are. Their weakness and helplessness come out when they are put through intense pressure. But it doesn’t have to be this way. Each believer made a choice early on which set the course for his spiritual walk. That choice made all the difference in determining whether they became strong lions or weak mice.

Just like one wrong choice can determine the outcome of a person’s life, one right choice can reverse this. Maybe you made some poor decisions as a young person and you suffer from them as an adult. Perhaps you compromised your sexual purity and are no longer able to serve in ministry. You could be on church discipline because of your rebellion against God. Now you feel empty and broken. I want you to know that God still wants to work in your life. If you will choose to give up your sinful attitude and actions to follow Him, He can transform you into a strong lion. Make up your mind today — your choice can make all the difference.
