Spinning Horizons – Jim Scudder, Jr.

Today’s Scripture: The words of the Lord are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times. Proverbs 12:6

As an instrument rated pilot, I’ve had to go through quite a bit of training. The most important thing I have learned when flying by instruments is that you must trust your instruments – especially when you cannot see the horizon.

One of the instrument training sessions involves wearing a device called “foggles.” They are goggles that prevent you from seeing outside the plane, but still allow you to look down and see the instrument panel. The instructor will take control of the airplane, and you will sit there while he puts the airplane into turns, climbs and dives. After thirty seconds or so, you really have no idea which way is up or down.

The instructor then tells you to look at the instruments, and you must immediately assess the situation and figure out what is going on. The reality of what is happening is always different than what you feel is happening. Therefore, you always must focus in on the instruments and trust them. When you are coming in to land in clouds or fog, you must rely on the Horizontal Situation Indicator. If you have everything lined up properly, this instrument forms a “cross.” As you follow that instrument in, the runway appears, and you can land safely.

Sometimes life feels like it is spinning out of control, and you cannot tell which way is up. The only thing to focus on is the ever-abiding love of God. The things that are happening in life will be different from what you feel is happening.

When you are abiding in Him and He is abiding in you through the Spirit of God, He will never leave you, and you have the assurance that there is a “runway” at the end of this flight. If you can keep our eyes on the cross of Christ, you are going to land safely.
