A Daily Cleansing – Jim Scudder Jr.

Today’s Scripture: Simon Peter saith unto him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head. Jesus saith to him, He that is washed needeth not save to wash his feet, but is clean every whit: and ye are clean, but not all. John 13:9-10

So often it is easy for people to become confused when it comes to Scripture verses that seem to indicate a need for daily good works for salvation. There is a difference between salvation and discipleship. They are two distinct things. When the sinner acknowledges that he needs a Savior and puts his total faith and trust in Jesus to get him to Heaven, he becomes “washed”, or cleansed of all sin. After we’ve been washed, we are in Christ, sealed unto the day of redemption.

In our passage today, our Lord refers to an event that should take place daily in the life of the believer. Walking the dusty roads of Israel, wearing only sandals or even going barefoot, the feet of the disciples would have been extremely dirty. In the same way, as we walk through life, our spiritual feet are going to get dirty. It is part of having an old nature. We still sin on a daily basis, and as such, we need to check our feet daily to make sure they are clean.

This daily cleansing of our feet has nothing to do with salvation. It is simply making sure that there is nothing in the way that would keep us from abiding in Christ.

Have you checked your feet today? If not, maybe now is a good time to spend a few minutes in prayer with the Lord. Ask Him to forgive you for where you’ve fallen, and He will be faithful and just to forgive and cleanse you (1 John 1:9).
