“Hi, this is Jonah. I am unable to come to the phone right now because I am too busy running from God. Since I will never get back to you, do not leave your name, number or message after the beep. In fact, never call this number again. I’ve decided I’m not going to do God’s will. Also, there is no number at which you can reach me. Goodbye.”

This might have been what Jonah’s answering machine said when God called Him. Jonah thought he could hide from the presence of the Lord. Sadly, many believers feel God does not care about them or know what He is doing with their lives. So they take matters into their own hands and run away.

By consistently neglecting God’s calling, we bring God’s judgment and chastening upon ourselves. Just as Jonah received chastening through a massive storm and three days in the stinking belly of a great fish, so God will prove to us it is much better to do His will than to run.

Friend, how have you responded to God’s call in your life? Perhaps He has called you to a mission field overseas, or even in your own backyard. Maybe He has pressed on your heart to reach out to someone who has hurt you deeply. When God calls, will you answer?

Purpose to whole-heartedly answer His call today.

Some say if only my fears and doubts will leave then I will get to work. But instead you should get to work and then your fears and doubts will leave. Dwight.L. Moody
