Today’s Scripture: Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart. 2 Timothy 2:22

What kind of spirit does God want us to have as Christians? When our Christian school sports teams play volleyball and basketball, it is very important for the fans and players to keep the right spirit. There was a Christian school coach whose team was playing ours. He would stand up and scream every time a call didn’t go his way. He would angrily stride up and down the court telling the referee the type of call he should be making, but he would also yell at his players constantly saying things like, “If I was as bad as you kids are at playing basketball, I’d go home!” I had some children sitting next to me watching the game. One said to me, “Boy, I’m glad he’s not my coach!” The thing about this man is he was a very nice man off the court. He let the spirit of Christ make him peaceable and gentle when he wasn’t coaching, but his competitiveness blinded him to the realization that we should let the spirit of Christ rule in us all of the time.

Do you have an area of your life in which you act like that coach? Are you gentle and kind in every area except one you have never surrendered to Christ’s control? Perhaps you need to realize the mind of Christ. There is nothing greater than to have Christ’s spirit of peace affect everything we say and do.
