Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. 2 Timothy 2:19a
The messenger ran as fast as he could. He had to get the battle plans to the general. The king had found out that the enemy was planning an ambush, and he was sending his most trusted messenger to get the warning to the troops. However, as the man was running through the fields to get to the army, he stumbled and injured his foot. As he hopped along, a young boy came along and asked him what had happened.
“I have to get this message to the general,” the messenger said to the boy. “I won’t make it in time because I twisted my ankle. You must run and take it for me.”
The young boy took off toward the camp. When he got there, he announced that he had news from the king. The soldiers laughed and ignored him. He pulled out the scroll and waved it around. He was quickly rushed to the tent, and he told the general the messenger had been injured and had given him the orders.
Although the men refused to believe the boy was telling the truth, the scroll with the king’s seal was all the proof he needed. After reading the new orders, the army was diverted and many lives were saved.
The Holy Spirit is the seal in us as the proof that we will be in Heaven with God. He indwells us and knows us. Romans 8:16 says that the Spirit bears witness with our spirit that we are the children of God. However, in Matthew 7:19-23, Jesus said that many would come to Him claiming to have done many wonderful works in His name, but He commanded them to depart from Him because He never knew them. They trusted their works, not Christ, to save them and were not indwelt with the Holy Spirit.
We are secure in our salvation because God looks at us and sees His seal. Just as the general could know the orders were from the king, we have proof that we belong to “the King of Heaven.”
