Today’s Scripture: But Jesus said, Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 19:14
A couple of years ago, I was privileged to be part of a ministry in a prison in West Virginia. We hosted a special event that gave inmates the opportunity to spend time with their children for an entire day. It featured a carnival-like setting, which included games, face painting, and snow cones.
The day before, we were taking questions from the inmates who would be participating in this event. One man asked, “What do I do? I have no idea how to be a father.” We replied, “Just have fun.” The next day, the man did just that with his daughter. Their time together was wonderful and very emotional. What made this event so successful wasn’t what the kids were doing, but the fact that they were doing it with Dad.
God has given every parent the ability to be a good father or mother. How we exercise this ability to be a good parent is by investing quality time with our children. We need to spend time playing with our kids, reading to them, or even just sitting down and talking with them.
I always tried to live to this general rule: if your kids ask you to do something with them, do your best to say yes. Even if you are very tired from work, even if it means cutting back on something that you wanted to do, always make time to spend with your kids.
Your kids are with you right now, but they won’t always be. You don’t need to spend a lot of money; they just want time with you. They are yours now; spend time with them and have fun!
