Today’s Scripture: And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women. Luke 1:28
In our modern times, social media is filled with people who are seeking favor. The pictures they post, the status updates that they tweet out – they never show the bad and frustrating parts of the person’s life. Every post is geared towards garnering the favor and approval of others.
At the time when God came to earth in the form of Jesus, all Jewish women were hoping that they would be the one that God would choose to bring forth the Promised One. Mary was from an insignificant, poor, working class town. She was not wealthy; she was from a humble family, with little expectations that her life would be any different in the future. Not the type of person you or I might expect to be chosen for such a special task.
But then she finds out that God thinks of her as “highly favored” – she would be the one to bear the Messiah. That tells me that to be highly favored we don’t need to be rich or come from a high-level family.
Mary was a young woman who apparently was not looking for the favor and approval of others, but she found the favor and approval of God. She was a humble woman – it takes humility to say, “I need a Savior.” We too can be highly favored before God – not by our wealth, education or accomplishments, but by our humility and trust.
