There’s nothing worse than having a guilty conscience. Research has found that as much as 95% of those in mental institutions are there for this reason.

Think about these people for a moment. Something in their past has taken such control of them that they can no longer function properly. They are so paralyzed by their emotions that they can’t even do simple things like eat, drink, or get any sleep. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to live that way.

Praise God, there’s a way we can be free from guilt. We don’t have to live with regret over missed opportunities, bad choices, or past sins because we’ve been forgiven. God forgave us the moment we put our trust in Jesus Christ’s death and shed blood to pay for our sins. When God looks at us, He doesn’t see us for the filthy, rotten sinners we are, but He sees the righteousness of Christ.

For this reason, Christians should be the last people in the world walking around with guilt, but many endure it every day and let it destroy them. How can we keep this from happening to us? By confessing the source of our guilt to God—not by holding it in—and making things right with others if we have hurt them by our actions. Only then will we be free to be ourselves again.

I want to be free to be me. If you’re like me and you love a good night’s sleep and peace of mind, you’ll put these things to practice today.

You never lose the love of God. Guilt is the warning that temporarily you are out of touch. — Jack Dominian
