Today’s Scripture: For if by one man’s offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ. Romans 5:17

Throughout the years, people have looked up to those who claim to have their life-views well analyzed and researched. From the world’s standpoint, one such person was Sigmund Freud, who stated, “And finally there is the painful riddle of death, for which no remedy at all has yet been found, nor probably will be.” According to him, we are living a completely hopeless life with an unexplainable oblivion awaiting us. I am sure that this subject matter is not what you were expecting to wake up to this morning, but I promise it does get much better. Believe it or not, sometimes we need to feel bad before we can feel good. Don’t believe me? Keep reading.

My father and I were driving through a tunnel in Whittier, Alaska. Surrounded by mountains, the tunnel was actually cut through a mountain and only allowed one-way traffic. I don’t know if you have ever driven through the mountains before, but let me tell you, I believe one way or another doing so will bring you closer to the Lord! We drove through this tunnel for about four or five minutes which felt more like four or five hours. To top it all off, we were driving on train tracks because a train just so happens to pass through there as well. At the very moment when I felt it would never end, finally, off in the distance of this harrowing passage, I saw some light at the end of the tunnel. To say the least, it was one of the most beautiful sights I have ever seen, and I felt like hugging the well-lit ground when we got to the other side.

I was pretty uneasy as I went through that dark tunnel, but when I came out, a wave of relief washed over me. When we consider that we all have a death sentence because of our sin, it does not feel like an uplifting concept to consider. However, when we realize that because of Christ’s resurrection, death was conquered, sin was vanquished, and victory can be ours every day, there is an overwhelming relief, and the peace of an infinite calm washes over us.

So, what solves the riddle of death? I can tell you in one word, grace. God’s miraculous grace is the light at the end of every tunnel we pass through in our lives. Even in physical death, we will have spiritual victory through our eternal life provided by God’s free gift of salvation by grace, no death sentence payment required. Are you going to live today with the weight of your old death sentence or live like you have new life that can never be taken away? Believer, we all have one…a life-sentence. So, you can put a smile on your face right now!
