Most of us aren’t very good at predicting the future. André-François Raffray, a retired French lawyer, paid $500 a month for the rights to take over an apartment in Arles, France, on the death of its current resident. The woman living in the apartment was Jeanne Calment, age 90. Tables predicting the mathematical probabilities of Jeanne Calment’s life span were clearly on the lawyer’s side.
30 years later with $180,000 in out-of-pocket expenses, Raffray had still not moved into the apartment. On Tuesday, February 21, 1995, Jeanne Calment celebrated her 120th birthday. She was verifiably the oldest person in the world. Each year on her birthday she would send Raffray a card that jokingly said, “Sorry I am still alive.”
André’s predictions were inaccurate, just like most of our predictions concerning the future. But did you know the devil has also been trying to predict the future? Our adversary knows what the Bible says concerning the end times, but he does not know when Christ will return. The Bible says at Christ’s Second Coming the entire nation of Israel will be saved; so the devil is busy stirring up Israel’s enemies, predicting they will destroy her and prevent this event. He also predicts God will be without witnesses in the world as he influences more Christians to lead self-absorbed lives and become ineffective servants.
God has other plans. He will preserve His people, and He will continue His work through faithful Christians until the Rapture. We are wise to trust Him to fulfill His plans for the world in general and us in particular in His perfect way and timing. His predictions are dead-center accurate, every time.
The devil has made predictions concerning your life. He has said you will never accomplish anything for Christ because of your weaknesses and shortcomings. He has said you will never be able to recover from your failures. His predictions are inaccurate. God has other plans for your life, and He knows the best way to fulfill them. Trust Him with the details.
