Today’s Scripture: Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong. Let all your things be done with charity. 1 Corinthians 16:13-14
We all love success! The Corinthian church was filled with believers who were “unsuccessful” in their Christian lives. In this passage, Paul gives the Corinthians five things they must do in order to be successful Christians.
- Be Watchful
We ought to watch for temptations, our adversary (the devil), false teachers, false doctrines, and the Lord’s coming. The soldiers on watch at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier are great examples of people who do not get distracted. We should be like them and not be distracted from watching the things God commands us to watch.
- Be Solid
We ought to “stand fast in the faith.” We are to stand up for what we believe. Determine to take stands no matter the pressures from the world. Good examples of people “being solid” would be Daniel and his three friends with the king’s meat, the fiery furnace, and the lion’s den.
- Be Mature
“Quit you like men,” in modern English means, “Grow up!” We are told in God’s Word to “put away childish things.” The Corinthians were masters at being spiritually immature (1 Corinthians 3:1). Here, Paul tells them to grow up! We must also grow in Christ if we are going to have spiritual success.
- Be Strong
This is not saying you have to be able to bench 200 lb. to be spiritual. In Ephesians 6:10, it says to be strong “in the power of his might.” We must be strong, but not by increasing our own strength. We need to rely on the strength of God. As Paul said, “When I am weak, then I am strong.” You must be strong if you want to be spiritually successful, but you must be dependent on Him if you want to be spiritually strong.
- Be Loving
This is the final tip. If you want to be successful, do everything with love. Love is the greatest attribute of God, and we are to love others the way He loves us.
Are you willing to do what it takes to achieve true success?
