Why Did God Ask Cain?

Today's Scripture: Genesis 4

Why did God ask Cain where his brother was? Here is the Creator of the Heavens and earth, who sees and knows everything and yet He asks Cain where his brother was.

God’s purpose wasn’t to find information. He wasn’t an investigative journalist seeking answers. In fact, God was not really seeking Abel. He was after Cain. Abel was already His, but Cain was choosing to go the other way.

The Almighty was looking for something from Cain that Cain had so far refused to give. Confession. Humility. Admission of sin and need for a Savior. That was why He was displeased with Cain’s sacrifice in the first place. Now he continues to reject God’s overtures. Instead Cain offers excuses.

Sadly, many choose the way of Cain. All God wants to hear is, “I’m a sinner, I need you.” And yet mankind continues to assert himself. Cain represents man’s futile attempt to gain God’s favor by his own goodness.

Abel was aware of his inability to atone for his own sins. He believed in the Redeemer who would eventually come.

God isn’t seeking self-righteousness. He is calling sinners. And He offers them His overflowing grace.

Will you come to Jesus today?
