Name, Rank, and Serial Number

by Dr. James A. Scudder

The Christian life is difficult. It’s full of battles.

I had a boat for sale, which a doctor wanted to purchase from me. He set the purchase date, but was delayed for a week because of a financing problem.

At the appointed time, the matter was postponed yet again, this time for two more days. We agreed to an electronic funds transfer. We were finally getting somewhere—or so I thought.

The doctor’s bank confirmed the safe transfer of his money into my account, yet when I called my bank, the money was nowhere to be found. The doctor had mistakenly sent his money to the wrong person at the wrong bank! So he sent it once again. Several hours later, my money was safe—and I was satisfied.

But the doctor told me the boat would have to be delivered in five minutes, or the truck driver would leave. Frantically, I weaved in and out of traffic (as fast as one can while towing a boat) to deliver the boat. I pulled in right as the man was leaving, and was able to deliver his boat. Though things could have been much worse, this typifies the everyday struggles we endure.

Have you ever had one of those days where nothing seems to go just right? There are times in life when we can do nothing but throw up our hands and exclaim, “I simply don’t understand it!” But we do know this—Jesus understands it more than we do, and He’s there with us to help us. Jesus was the eternal Son of God, the “co-Creator” of the heavens and the earth. Yet, He became a human being, One Who experienced the full spectrum of human emotions and personally identified with the pangs of hunger, thirst, and suffering—all things we endure on a daily basis. He understands, because He’s been there Himself. There is a purpose in all our earthly struggles, and we should trust Him, for He will take everything that we go through and make us better people.

Life is full of battles, but as Christians, we can live victoriously. The devil will do all that he can to cause us to be disgruntled and take our eyes from Christ, but we can resist his assaults. We must stand our ground, stay the course—and in the end, we will win.

Once You've Had Steak, It's Hard to Go Back to Burgers

by Pastor Jim Scudder Jr.

I've found the book of Hebrews a wonderful book. I’ve always loved it, but the more you study it and zero in on it, the more you realize how great it is.

There are many people who are afraid of Hebrews. It’s a book that frightens them because they are afraid of what it has to say, and they feel it’s too difficult for personal study. Hebrews does have five warnings, but these warnings fade in comparison to the abundance of encouragement and exhortation we find throughout its pages. As to the book’s difficulty, there are some deep spiritual truths, but if we understand the big picture, we will better understand what these truths mean in practice.

When I was a kid, we rarely ate out. But when we did, guess what I got? The children’s menu. That’s totally fine, because I was a child. One day, however, we walked into a restaurant. My sister, Julie, and I got the normal routine—two children’s menus. Feeling very grown-up at 12, we asked for adult menus. Fortunately, the waitress consented.

I quickly noticed some differences between the children’s menu and the adult menu. The children’s menu had items like hot dogs, chicken nuggets, hamburgers, and spaghetti. When I got the adult menu, I was amazed that so many foods existed! Foods such as Filet Mignon, Prime Rib, and New York Strip Steak. I chose the steak.

Before then, I had only tried hamburger, chicken nuggets, and macaroni and cheese—kids love all that stuff anyway—but once that tender, juicy steak touched my lips, I said, “It’s going to be awfully tough to go back to hamburgers!” That’s because I had tried the best! Anything other than steak would have been a step down.

Hebrews is a book of evaluation. The first of three key words in this book is “better.” “Better” is used thirteen times throughout the text. I had learned that steak was better, or superior to hamburger. Likewise, the writer of Hebrews made an effort to show the superiority of Christ to the Law, the Levitical priesthood, and the sacrifices. There was something better!

Jesus Christ and His salvation were better than the Hebrew system of the law. Jesus Christ was, in fact, better than the angels. He brings us a better hope. He is the Mediator of a better covenant. The book of Hebrews is established on better promises. It’s so much better—better by far—living in Christ!
